Best Crypto Wallet Germany: Which Exchange Wallet Is Legal?

"Beste krypto wallet deutschland" usually means one of two different things. Most people want to know which exchange can legally hold crypto for them, the custodial wallet built into a trading account. A smaller group means a self-custody wallet, where only the user holds the private key.

This krypto wallet vergleich covers the first meaning: the custodial wallets of the five exchanges licensed to serve Germany, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit, OKX and KuCoin. It then explains self-custody as the alternative, without naming any specific wallet brand to switch to.

What do people actually mean by "crypto wallet" in Germany?

A custodial wallet is the balance you see inside your exchange account. Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit, OKX and KuCoin each hold the private keys on your behalf, you just see a number. A self-custody wallet is different: software or hardware where you alone control the key. Our self-custody glossary entry covers the full definition.

German search results mix both meanings together, which is why an exchange review sits next to a hardware wallet ad on the same page. This guide stays on the custodial side first, then separates out self-custody later.

Which exchanges can legally hold your crypto wallet balance in Germany?

Under the EU's MiCA law, holding customers' crypto assets on their behalf is a named, licensed activity. Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 calls it "custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients," one of the crypto-asset services a licensed CASP can be authorised to provide (Recital 21, Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 on EUR-Lex).

Here's where the five exchanges stand on MiCA authorisation:

Exchange Licensed entity Regulator Country Date granted
Coinbase Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. CSSF Luxembourg 2025-06-20†
Kraken Payward Europe Solutions Limited Central Bank of Ireland Ireland 2025-06-25†
Bybit Bybit EU GmbH FMA Austria 2025-05-28†
KuCoin KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH FMA Austria 2025-11-27†
OKX OKX Europe Limited MFSA Malta 2025-01-27†

Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit and KuCoin all appear on ESMA's interim MiCA CASP register, checked 2026-11-07. OKX's record is slightly different: it holds a full MiCA licence from the MFSA in Malta, and the entry explicitly lists "custody" as one of the services covered under that licence†. For the other four, the source doesn't break licences down by service, so don't assume it confirms custody specifically. It confirms the licence exists.

How do the 5 exchange wallets compare on security?

A licence tells you who can legally hold your crypto. It doesn't tell you how that balance is protected day to day. Here's what each exchange publishes:

Exchange Proof of reserves Notable history App
Coinbase Only for wrapped tokens like cbBTC, no exchange-wide customer-balance proof† None noted in our source iOS/Android†
Kraken Independent audit, users can check their own balance via Record ID or Merkle leaf† None noted in our source iOS/Android†
Bybit Monthly Hacken audit, reserve ratios above 100% in every report checked Feb to Sep 2026† $1.5B hack in Feb 2025, restored 1:1 within 72 hours† iOS/Android†
OKX Confirmed, no further breakdown published† None noted in our source iOS/Android†
KuCoin Monthly Hacken audit, 32 consecutive months, BTC at 109% as of 2026-09-30† $280M hack in 2020, fully reimbursed† iOS/Android†

Moving funds out of a custodial wallet also carries a cost. One example, plain arithmetic: Coinbase charges 0.01% to withdraw USDT, capped at 20 USDT†. Withdrawing 5,000 USDT costs 5,000 x 0.0001 = 0.5 USDT.

Withdrawal fees differ by currency and method, and our source for Kraken's withdrawal fees only breaks out US-region USD transfers†, not SEPA/EUR transfers German users would actually use, so it isn't shown here. Check the live fee screen on each exchange before you withdraw. These numbers are what each exchange states, not a quote for your exact transaction.

What is self-custody, and when does it make sense instead?

A self-custody wallet puts the private key in your hands, not the exchange's. That key is usually represented by a seed phrase, a list of words that can rebuild your wallet on any device. Our seed phrase glossary entry explains how that works.

Self-custody wallets come in two forms. A hot wallet stays connected to the internet, like an app on your phone, explained in our hot wallet glossary entry. A cold wallet stays offline, usually a physical device, explained in our cold wallet glossary entry. None of the five exchanges in this article are being reviewed as self-custody providers, and we're not naming a third-party wallet brand to switch to. That's outside the scope of this comparison.

A risk management idea from trading practice applies here too, even though it was built for a different problem. One core rule says a trader who puts all their capital into a single low-cap coin, with no backup held in a larger asset, has no way to recover from a bad surprise. The backup has to exist before the surprise happens . The same logic applies to where crypto sits, not just what it's invested in. Keeping all of a balance on one exchange, with none held anywhere else, concentrates a single point of failure . That failure could be a hack, a frozen withdrawal, or a regulatory problem at that one platform.

How to choose between the two

  1. Decide how often you trade. Active trading needs funds sitting in the exchange wallet you're already using.
  2. Check the MiCA table above for the exchange and entity you're signing up with.
  3. If you're holding for a long time or a large amount, consider moving part of it to self-custody. Not all of it, necessarily.
  4. If you choose self-custody, write your seed phrase down and store it offline. Losing it means losing access for good.
  5. Before depositing a large sum, re-check the exchange's current security or proof-of-reserves page. These pages get updated.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a custodial wallet balance as something only you control. Control is shared with the exchange by design.
  • Assuming a MiCA licence means an exchange also offers a self-custody wallet. That's not confirmed in our source for any of the five.
  • Storing a seed phrase in cloud notes or email. A self-custody key needs offline storage, not a screenshot.
  • Confusing proof of reserves with insurance. It shows reserves exist at a point in time. It doesn't guarantee a refund if something goes wrong.

FAQ

Is it safe to keep crypto in an exchange wallet in Germany?

No wallet type is risk-free. Each of the five exchanges above holds a MiCA authorisation, or, for OKX, an EU licence that names custody as a covered service†, and each publishes some level of security or reserves information†††††. That's a transparency signal, not a guarantee against hacks or platform failure. See our methodology for how we check exchange claims.

What's the difference between a custodial and a self-custody wallet?

A custodial wallet means the exchange holds the keys and you access a balance through your account. A self-custody wallet means you hold the keys yourself, usually via a seed phrase. See the self-custody glossary entry for more.

Do any of these 5 exchanges offer a built-in self-custody wallet?

Not confirmed in our source. We didn't find a verified fact for any of the five exchanges confirming a built-in self-custody wallet feature, so we're not claiming one exists.

Do I need a separate wallet app to use these exchanges?

No. Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit, OKX and KuCoin each have their own iOS and Android app with the wallet balance built in†††††.
