How to buy bitcoin with SEPA in Germany
SEPA is usually the cheapest way to fund a crypto exchange from Germany. See which exchanges confirm a 0% SEPA fee and how the deposit works, step by step.

SEPA is normally the cheapest way to move euros into a crypto exchange from Germany, cheaper than a card payment or a SWIFT wire. Of the five exchanges we cover, OKX and KuCoin both confirm a SEPA deposit with no exchange-side fee††. Coinbase, Kraken, and Bybit list bank transfers too, but our current source doesn't give a specific SEPA/EUR fee figure for any of them.
This is on our list of exchanges available to German users (checked against public sources, last checked 2026-09-12); confirm its current status on ESMA's MiCA register or BaFin's site before you deposit.

What is SEPA and why does it matter for buying bitcoin in Germany?
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) lets you send euros between bank accounts in 36 European countries using just an IBAN, no card network and no currency conversion. For German users this is the native rail: your Sparkasse, N26, or DKB account already speaks SEPA. A standard SEPA transfer usually clears within one business day. SEPA Instant, where the receiving exchange supports it, can land in seconds.
Deposit by card and a payment processor takes a cut. Deposit by international wire and a bank adds a handling fee on top. SEPA skips both, which is why it's the method most German crypto buyers search for when typing "bitcoin kaufen mit SEPA".
Which exchange has the cheapest SEPA deposit for EUR?
| Exchange | SEPA deposit fee | Processing time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| OKX | 0%, only your own bank's fees may apply | Instant to 2 business days | † |
| KuCoin | No KuCoin markup beyond intermediary bank fees | SEPA Instant or next business day | † |
| Coinbase | Lists bank transfer among its deposit options, but our current source doesn't confirm a specific SEPA/EUR fee figure — check Coinbase's own deposit page before you send funds | Not confirmed in our source | † |
| Kraken | Lists bank transfer among its deposit options, but our current source doesn't confirm a specific SEPA/EUR fee figure — check Kraken's own deposit page before you send funds | Not confirmed in our source | † |
| Bybit | Lists bank transfer among its deposit options, but our current source doesn't confirm a specific SEPA/EUR fee figure — check Bybit's own deposit page before you send funds | Not confirmed in our source | † |
OKX and KuCoin are the only two of these five exchanges where our Knowledge Graph confirms the SEPA line item directly. That doesn't rule out the other three. It just means we can't quote you a number for them without guessing, and we won't guess.

Two worked examples, using only confirmed numbers.
Deposit cost. You send 500 EUR to OKX by SEPA. The fee is 0%, so you pay 0 EUR in deposit charges beyond anything your own bank bills you†. Compare that to sending the same 500 EUR by a non-SEPA international wire on Bybit as a non-US bank transfer: the published fee there is 0.25% with a 25 USD minimum, so a 500 EUR wire would cost the 25 USD minimum rather than the smaller percentage amount†. SEPA avoids that minimum entirely because it isn't a wire.
Trading cost after the deposit. Say your 500 EUR lands and you place a market buy on OKX. OKX's regular taker fee is 0.1%†. On a 500 EUR order that's 0.50 EUR in trading fees, separate from the deposit itself. Fee arithmetic is simple: trade size times fee percent equals cost. Nothing more.
How do you buy bitcoin with a SEPA deposit, step by step?
- Verify your identity. All five exchanges require KYC before you can deposit or withdraw fiat. Have your ID and proof of address ready.
- Add your German IBAN. Link the bank account under your own name, matching the name on your KYC documents exactly.
- Start the SEPA transfer. Copy the reference code the exchange gives you and paste it into the payment reference field. Don't type your own note instead.
- Wait for the deposit to post. Timing depends on the exchange and whether SEPA Instant is supported, as shown in the table above.
- Place your buy order. Once the euros show as available balance, you can buy bitcoin at the exchange's listed price and fee.
What mistakes do people make with SEPA deposits in Germany?
- Wrong reference code. Exchanges match incoming SEPA transfers to your account using the reference text. Skip it or change it and the deposit can sit unmatched for days.
- Sending from someone else's account. A transfer from a partner's or parent's IBAN that doesn't match your verified name will usually fail KYC checks, even if the money arrives.
- Mixing up SEPA Instant with standard SEPA. Not every bank or exchange supports SEPA Instant. Assuming instant speed and then planning a trade around it can leave you waiting a full business day instead.
- Treating a fast deposit as a reason to buy immediately. Two people can look at the same funded account and act differently: one waits for an actual reason and a plan, the other buys simply because the euros just landed . A cleared SEPA deposit is just cash sitting in your account. It is not a signal.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEPA free on every exchange? Not confirmed for every exchange. OKX and KuCoin both state no exchange-side SEPA fee in our source††. Coinbase, Kraken, and Bybit are not confirmed either way for SEPA specifically, so check each exchange's current deposit page.
How long does a SEPA deposit take? On OKX, 1 to 2 business days, often faster†. On KuCoin, SEPA Instant or the next business day†. Timing for the other three exchanges isn't confirmed in our source.
Can I use SEPA Instant to buy bitcoin faster? Only where both your bank and the exchange support it. KuCoin names SEPA Instant as an option†. Ask your own bank whether it offers SEPA Instant before assuming it.
Is SEPA safer than a card deposit? SEPA and card deposits both run through regulated banking rails. The main practical risk with SEPA is a mistyped reference code or an account name mismatch, not the payment rail itself.
Bottom line
If the SEPA fee itself matters most to you, OKX and KuCoin are the two exchanges here with a confirmed figure. You can compare the two directly on /compare/okx-vs-kucoin/, or read the individual reviews at /exchanges/okx/ and /exchanges/kucoin/.
