Basics

Fiat on-ramp

A fiat on-ramp is the payment method — bank transfer, card, or a third-party processor — that lets you convert regular currency into crypto on an exchange.

On-ramps differ mainly in speed and cost: bank transfers (ACH, SEPA, wire) tend to be slower but cheaper, card payments are near-instant but usually carry a percentage fee, and third-party widgets add their own margin on top of the exchange's fee.

For example, depositing $500 by card at a 2% on-ramp fee costs $10, versus a bank transfer that might be free or a small flat fee — the difference is real money before you've even placed a trade.

A common mistake is comparing exchanges only on trading fees and ignoring the on-ramp fee entirely, even though for a one-time deposit the on-ramp cost can be larger than what you'd pay in trading fees for months.
