Does the Coinbase app work in Germany? Here's what it covers, how KYC works, and what SEPA details aren't confirmed in our sources.

Coinbase review
The Coinbase app exists for both iOS and Android†, and it works for users in Germany. But it runs under a Luxembourg-based MiCA licence, not a separate BaFin licence for Germany†. One thing we cannot confirm from our sources: the exact SEPA deposit fee inside the app.

What is the Coinbase app, and does it work in Germany?
The app is just Coinbase.com in your pocket. It uses the same account, the same balances, and the same login as the website†. There's no separate "Germany version" with different features. If you already have a Coinbase account, the app logs into it.
This is on our list of exchanges available to German users (checked against public sources, last checked 2026-09-12); confirm its current status on ESMA's MiCA register or BaFin's site before you deposit.
For a full breakdown of trading fees in Germany, see coinbase-fees-germany. This article only covers the app experience.
What can you do inside the Coinbase app?
Coinbase's feature set covers spot trading, staking, an "earn" program, and advanced trading tools†. Futures, margin, and copy trading are not available on Coinbase†. So if you're looking for leveraged derivatives in the app, Coinbase isn't built for that.
| Feature | Available on Coinbase? |
|---|---|
| Spot trading | Yes† |
| Staking | Yes† |
| Earn program | Yes† |
| Advanced trading | Yes† |
| Futures | No† |
| Margin | No† |
| Copy trading | No† |
Check coinbase-fees-germany if you want the maker/taker numbers behind spot trading. We won't repeat them here.
How does KYC and onboarding work on the app?
Identity verification is required on Coinbase†. The app doesn't have its own separate verification path. You go through the same ID check whether you start on your phone or on a browser.
A typical onboarding flow looks like this:
- Download the app and create or log into your account.
- Submit ID verification (government ID, standard checks).
- Link a payment method.
- Wait for verification before your first deposit or trade.
Our sources don't describe a faster or different KYC flow specific to the app. Treat it as the same process as the website, just on a smaller screen.
Can you fund the app with SEPA from a German bank account?
Here's where we have to be direct: we don't have a confirmed SEPA fee for Coinbase in our source data. Coinbase's documented deposit methods cover ACH, Fedwire, SWIFT, debit card, and PayPal, all listed for US customers†. None of them is SEPA. The documented withdrawal fees cover internal transfer, USDT, Bitcoin Lightning, and other crypto networks†, again with no SEPA or EUR line item.
That doesn't mean SEPA doesn't exist on the app. It means we can't quote a number for it without guessing, and we won't guess. Before you send any euros, open the app yourself, go to the deposit screen, and read the fee shown there. Or check coinbase.com/de directly.
A common slip happens right here, after someone has already picked Coinbase. They download the app, finish the install, and assume the hard part is done. Then they skip actually confirming the ID verification status and the exact deposit channel before moving euros in. The mistake isn't picking the wrong exchange. It's treating "app installed" as "account checked and ready."
Which MiCA licence covers Coinbase for German users?
Coinbase operates in the EU through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., authorised by the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) on 2025-06-20†. This is a MiCA (CASP) authorisation.
That matters because MiCA licences passport across the whole EU. A CSSF licence in Luxembourg lets Coinbase serve German customers without needing a separate BaFin licence issued in Germany. It is not the same thing as a German national licence, and it doesn't come from BaFin directly. If you want background on how MiCA passporting works across exchanges, read mica-licensed-crypto-exchanges.
What if something goes wrong in the app?
Coinbase offers support through email, a ticket system, and a help center, available 24/7†. There's no live phone line listed in our source. If a deposit doesn't show up or a withdrawal looks stuck, use the in-app help center first. It routes to the same support system as the website.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the app has a faster or lighter KYC process than the website. It doesn't, based on our source†.
- Sending a SEPA transfer before checking the fee shown in the app that day. Our sources don't list a confirmed SEPA fee†.
- Looking for futures or margin trading in the app. Neither is available on Coinbase†.
- Treating the Luxembourg MiCA licence as a German BaFin licence. It's an EU-wide passport, not a national one†.
FAQ
Is the Coinbase app free to download?
Downloading the app itself doesn't cost anything through the App Store or Google Play. Trading and deposit fees are separate; see coinbase-fees-germany for those numbers.
Is the app as safe as the website?
They run on the same account and the same backend†. Our source doesn't describe any security gap between the two.
Can I trade futures in the app?
No. Futures trading isn't part of Coinbase's feature set†.
Do I need a different app version for Germany?
No. It's the same app, same download, same account system†. The regulatory coverage comes from the Luxembourg MiCA entity, not from a different app build†.
For rating counts or download numbers, check the current figures yourself on the App Store or Google Play. We don't have a verified number for either in our source data.
