Cheapest Crypto Exchange in Germany: 2026 Fee Comparison

There's no such thing as a truly free crypto exchange. Among the 5 exchanges available to German users, OKX has the lowest spot taker fee at 0.10%† and the lowest maker fee at 0.08%†, with Bybit and KuCoin tied close behind at 0.10% for both††††. Coinbase and Kraken charge more at their lowest tier. The numbers below are trading fees only, not deposit or withdrawal costs.

This is on our list of exchanges available to German users (checked against public sources, last checked 2026-09-12); confirm its current status on ESMA's MiCA register or BaFin's site before you deposit.

What does "cheapest" actually mean?

"Cheapest" in crypto trading almost always means the spot trading fee, split into two numbers: maker and taker. A maker order adds liquidity to the order book (a limit order that doesn't fill right away). A taker order removes liquidity (a market order, or a limit order that fills instantly). Taker fees are usually higher.

These fees also depend on a tier. Most exchanges start everyone at a base tier (often called VIP0 or Regular) and lower the fee as your 30-day trading volume grows. Every number in this article is the base tier rate, the one a new user in Germany actually pays on day one.

What the trading fee does not cover:

  • Deposit fees (bank transfer, SEPA, card)
  • Withdrawal fees (sending crypto or euros out)
  • The spread, meaning the gap between buy and sell price shown on the screen

A 0% maker fee headline, which Coinbase can offer at its top volume tier†, is not the same as a free account. Deposits, withdrawals and spread still apply.

Spot trading fee comparison: who charges the least?

Based on the base-tier rates published by each exchange, here's how the 5 options available in Germany line up as of this update.

Exchange Maker fee Taker fee Tier
OKX 0.08%† 0.10%† Spot, lowest VIP0
Bybit 0.10%† 0.10%† Regular (VIP0), maker rebate available
KuCoin 0.10%† 0.10%† Regular, no VIP
Coinbase 0%–0.40%† 0.05%–0.60%† Tiered by 30-day volume
Kraken 0.40%† 0.80%† Tier 1, under $2.5K 30-day volume

OKX, Bybit and KuCoin sit in the same narrow band, 0.08%–0.10% maker and 0.10% taker††††††. Coinbase's range is the widest of the five, 0%–0.40% maker and 0.05%–0.60% taker††, so it can undercut all of them at high volume or cost more than any of them for a small, occasional trade. Kraken is the most expensive of the five at the entry tier, with a 0.80% taker fee against OKX's 0.10%††.

Two worked examples, fee only:

A €1,000 market buy (taker order) costs €1.00 on OKX at 0.10%†, and €8.00 on Kraken at 0.80% at Tier 1†. Same trade, €7.00 difference.

A €500 limit order (maker) on KuCoin at 0.10% costs €0.50†. The same €500 trade on Coinbase could cost anywhere from €0.00 to €2.00 depending on your 30-day volume tier†.

Why the lowest fee isn't always the lowest total cost

Picking an exchange by one number and ignoring everything else is a common way traders lose money before they even place a trade. Investing has rules, and one of them is that a single metric never tells the whole story: your risk comes from the full picture, not the cheapest line item. Applied here, that means fee percentage should be one factor among several, not the only one you check.

Before you compare fees, also check:

  • Deposit cost for your method. OKX lists SEPA euro deposits at €0†, and KuCoin's support page says SEPA deposits carry no KuCoin markup beyond your bank's own charges†. Bybit charges 0.25% with a $25 minimum on non-US bank wire transfers†. Coinbase's SWIFT transfer fee is $25†, listed in US dollars; its euro-specific SEPA fee isn't verified in our data.
  • Withdrawal cost when you move funds back out. OKX's SEPA euro withdrawal is listed at €0, with only your own bank's fees possibly applying†.
  • Security track record and whether the exchange publishes proof of reserves.
  • Customer support quality if something goes wrong with your account.

A sign-up bonus or a slightly lower taker fee doesn't make up for a slow withdrawal or a support ticket that goes nowhere. Treat the fee table as a filter, not the final answer.

How to actually get the lowest fee

  1. Place limit orders instead of market orders when you can. A limit order usually qualifies as "maker," which is cheaper on every exchange in this table.
  2. Check your current tier before comparing. Your own 30-day volume might already put you on a different rate than the base tier shown here, especially on Coinbase.
  3. Add up deposit and withdrawal costs for your actual payment method, not just the trading fee.
  4. Keep trade size realistic. Small, frequent trades pay the fee percentage every single time, so fewer, larger trades reduce the number of times you pay it.
  5. Re-check the fee page before you fund a new account. Published rates change, and the numbers above are dated to this update.

Use the fee calculator to run your own trade size against these rates before you commit.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a "zero-fee maker" headline means a free account. It only applies at a specific volume tier and never covers deposits or withdrawals.
  • Comparing one exchange's taker fee to another's maker fee. Match the same order type before you compare.
  • Ignoring withdrawal fees because the trading fee looked good. A low spot fee doesn't help if sending funds out costs more somewhere else.
  • Forgetting that Coinbase's rate depends on your 30-day volume. A new account pays a different number than a six-month account.
  • Treating fee percentage as the only factor in picking a home for your funds. Security and support matter just as much once your money is sitting there.

FAQ

Is there a truly 0% fee crypto exchange in Germany?

Not among the 5 exchanges covered here at the base tier. Coinbase's maker fee can reach 0% at its highest 30-day volume tier†, but that's a high-volume tier, not a standard new-account rate, and it still doesn't cover deposits or withdrawals.

Do deposit and withdrawal fees matter more than trading fees?

It depends on how often you trade versus how often you move money. A frequent trader feels the trading fee most. Someone who deposits once and holds feels the deposit/withdrawal fee more. Check both for your own habits.

Does the fee change based on how much I trade?

Yes, on exchanges with tiered pricing. Coinbase's fee moves across a wide range based on 30-day volume††. OKX, Bybit and KuCoin publish a flat base-tier rate for regular users†††, with lower rates available at higher volume.
