Is KuCoin Safe in Germany? MiCA Licence and Security Checked
Does KuCoin have a licence for German users? We checked the MiCA claim, the proof-of-reserves record, and KuCoin's US legal trouble.

KuCoin review
Short answer: KuCoin can serve German and EU users through a MiCA CASP licence held by the entity KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH, granted by Austria's Financial Market Authority on 27 November 2025†. We checked this entity against ESMA's interim MiCA register on 7 November 2026, and it is listed there. If you search "kucoin erfahrungen" or "ist kucoin seriös" before depositing, check which KuCoin entity your account is opened with.
This is on our list of exchanges available to German users (checked against public sources, last checked 2026-09-12); confirm its current status on ESMA's MiCA register or BaFin's site before you deposit.

Is KuCoin licensed to operate in Germany?
A licence under MiCA (the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets rules) lets an exchange legally serve users across the whole EU, Germany included, once a national regulator grants it. For KuCoin, the record we found names KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH as the licensed entity, with the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) as the regulator, dated 27 November 2025†.
That record comes from ESMA's interim MiCA register, the official list of authorised crypto-asset service providers, which we checked on 7 November 2026. A licence can change, so check the register again before a large deposit.
A separate, older fact in our database says much less: press coverage of KuCoin's 2025-2026 US settlements mentions an EU MiCA licence in passing, with the note "verify current status on the regulator's register before relying on it"†. Neither source confirms the licence directly on an official register. Before you fund an account, check:
- ESMA's public register of MiCA-authorised crypto-asset service providers
- BaFin's site, which lists firms authorised to serve German users
Both are free to search and take a few minutes.
Is KuCoin safe? What we actually know about security
KuCoin publishes a monthly proof-of-reserves report, audited by the independent firm Hacken, with 32 consecutive months of reports as of the September 2026 report†. The most recent one showed a Bitcoin reserve ratio of 109%, meaning KuCoin held slightly more BTC than it owes users on paper†. July 2026 figures showed BTC at 112%, ETH at 114%, and USDC at 122%†.
That is a real, checkable track record. It is not a guarantee against future problems.
KuCoin has a hacking history worth knowing. In September 2020, intruders linked to the Lazarus Group stole private keys from hot wallets, worth about $280 million†. KuCoin's CEO confirmed the breach publicly. About 78% of the funds were recovered through partners, 6% through legal action, and the remaining 16% was covered by KuCoin and insurance†. Users got their money back. In April 2023, KuCoin's official Twitter account was hijacked, a small incident that did not touch funds held on the exchange†.
Here's a trap worth naming directly. Wanting a single article to declare KuCoin completely safe, licence fully confirmed, before you act is the same mistake traders make when they wait for a perfect signal before placing a trade. That certainty doesn't exist. The honest move is to check the specific claims yourself (the MiCA filing, the proof-of-reserves report), accept that some risk stays unresolved even after checking, and size your deposit to match that leftover risk instead of waiting for a verdict that removes it.
What about KuCoin's US and other legal trouble?
KuCoin is barred from the US market for at least two years under a January 2025 plea deal with the US Department of Justice, backed by a March 2026 CFTC consent order†. This followed a 2023 New York Attorney General settlement and a 2024 CFTC complaint†. None of this applies to the EU licensing question above. The US restriction is a separate, US-specific court order, not a statement about KuCoin's standing in Germany or the EU.
What else we checked
KuCoin was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in Singapore††. KYC verification is required to use the platform†. It lists spot trading, futures, margin, staking, and P2P trading, but no copy trading or card product†. Around 300 coins are listed, an approximate figure†. The KuCoin app is available for both iOS and Android†.

How to verify this yourself
- Open ESMA's MiCA CASP register and search "KuCoin" or "KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH".
- Open BaFin's site and search the same two names.
- Compare the entity name and date against what's claimed here. A match in both places is a confirmed licence. No match yet means the tracker is ahead of the official listing, which happens.
- Read KuCoin's latest proof-of-reserves report directly on its site before you judge the reserve ratio for yourself.
- Decide your deposit size based on what's still unverified, not on how confident the marketing sounds.
That's five steps. None of them take more than ten minutes.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the EU licence covers you without checking which KuCoin entity your account is opened with.
- Assuming the US ban means KuCoin is unsafe or illegal everywhere. It is a US-specific court order.
- Reading one hack headline from 2020 without checking what happened after it, including the reimbursement.
- Skipping KYC steps and then being surprised when withdrawals get held.
- Depositing a large amount before checking the licence status on ESMA or BaFin at all.
FAQ
Is KuCoin legal in Germany?
KuCoin appears on our checked list for German users as of 12 September 2026, based on public sources. Confirm current status on ESMA's or BaFin's register before relying on it.
Does KuCoin have a BaFin licence?
We found no direct BaFin filing confirming this. The licence claim we have points to Austria's FMA, not BaFin, under KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH†.
Is KuCoin's MiCA licence confirmed on the official register?
Yes. KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH is listed on ESMA's interim MiCA register with authorisation from Austria's FMA dated 27 November 2025†. We checked it on 7 November 2026.
Has KuCoin ever been hacked?
Yes. A 2020 breach cost about $280 million, fully addressed through recovery, legal action, and KuCoin's own funds†. A smaller 2023 Twitter account hijack did not touch user funds†.
