Coinbase vs Kraken Germany: MiCA licence, fees, SEPA compared
Coinbase and Kraken both serve Germany under MiCA passporting, not a BaFin licence. Compare their EU entities, fees, and SEPA status here.

Both Coinbase and Kraken can legally serve German users, but neither holds a licence from BaFin itself. They cover Germany through MiCA passporting, using an entity licensed in a different EU country. The two entities are not the same, the regulators are not the same, and SEPA fees for German bank transfers are not confirmed in our source for either exchange.
This is on our list of exchanges available to German users (checked against public sources, last checked 2026-09-12); confirm its current status on ESMA's MiCA register or BaFin's site before you deposit.
If you searched "coinbase oder kraken" or "coinbase vs kraken deutschland," the short version is this: check the entity name on your account page, not the brand name on the homepage. That one detail decides which regulator you can actually complain to if something goes wrong.
Which MiCA entity actually covers Germany?
Neither exchange has applied for a standalone German licence. Under MiCA, a licence granted in one EU country can be passported to serve every other EU country, including Germany. That's how both platforms operate here.
| Exchange | MiCA entity | Regulator | Licence date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. | CSSF (Luxembourg) | 20 June 2025 | † |
| Kraken | Payward Europe Solutions Limited | Central Bank of Ireland | 25 June 2025 | † |
Coinbase's German users sit under a Luxembourg entity supervised by the CSSF†. Kraken's German users sit under an Irish entity supervised by the Central Bank of Ireland†. BaFin doesn't issue either licence. It only recognises the passport.
Don't take the word "licensed" at face value. Open ESMA's MiCA CASP register and type the entity name yourself. BaFin also publishes a list of passported firms on its own site, worth five minutes before you fund an account.
How do Coinbase and Kraken fees compare?
Fee tiers aren't country-specific. They apply the same way to German traders as anyone else.
| Exchange | Maker fee | Taker fee | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | 0% to 0.4% (volume tiers) | 0.05% to 0.6% (volume tiers) | †† |
| Kraken | 0.4% (Tier 1, regular) | 0.8% (Tier 1, regular) | †† |
Two worked examples, using the higher-end rate for a small trader on each platform:
- A €500 trade on Coinbase at the 0.6% taker rate costs €3.00 in fees†.
- A €500 trade on Kraken at the Tier 1 taker rate of 0.8% costs €4.00 in fees†.
At the low end, Coinbase's taker fee can drop to 0.05%, which would cost €0.25 on the same €500 trade†. Kraken's Tier 1 rate stays flat until your 30-day volume crosses its first threshold††. For small, occasional trades, Coinbase's published range runs lower than Kraken's standard tier.
Can you use SEPA with Coinbase or Kraken in Germany?
Not confirmed in our source. Our Knowledge Graph lists Coinbase's deposit options as ACH, Fedwire, and SWIFT, all priced in USD for US customers†. Kraken's listed methods cover ACH via Plaid and USD wire transfers, again priced for US customers†. Neither record shows a confirmed SEPA fee in euros.
That gap matters more than most comparison pages admit. A German user depositing euros by SEPA could pay nothing, or could pay a fee neither exchange discloses in the sources we checked††. Check the exchange's own fee page, logged in with your account country set to Germany, before you move money.
Which one fits which German user?
Coinbase fits a beginner who wants a simple app and doesn't plan to move large sums. Its interface explains each step, and support runs 24/7 through a help center†.
Kraken fits someone who wants to check their own balance against an independent audit. Kraken publishes Proof of Reserves checked by an outside accounting firm, and a user can confirm their own holdings through a Record ID†. Coinbase's public proof-of-reserves page covers only its wrapped tokens, not the exchange's full customer balances†. If reserve transparency is your main concern, Kraken's disclosure goes further on that specific point.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming "MiCA licensed" means "BaFin licensed." It means passported from another EU country, checked under a different regulator.
- Treating the Coinbase or Kraken brand name on an ad as proof of EU status, instead of opening the entity name on ESMA's register yourself.
- Expecting SEPA fees to match the maker/taker numbers in the fee tables above. They're separate costs, and neither is confirmed in our source.
- Picking an exchange because its name shows up most in German crypto news, without checking which legal entity will actually hold your funds.
That last habit is worth slowing down for. Choosing an exchange because its name keeps appearing in headlines, or because "MiCA" sounds reassuring in a tweet, is closer to a gambler's shortcut than a decision based on facts . A trader's version of the same decision takes two extra minutes: open the regulator's own register, search the entity name, and read the licence date before funding an account. Neither habit needs more skill. One just checks the primary source first.
FAQ
Is Coinbase or Kraken licensed in Germany specifically?
No. Both serve Germany under MiCA passporting from a different EU country, Coinbase from Luxembourg† and Kraken from Ireland†. Neither holds a standalone BaFin licence.
Which has lower fees, Coinbase or Kraken?
Coinbase's published range runs from 0% to 0.4% maker and 0.05% to 0.6% taker††. Kraken's standard Tier 1 rate is a flat 0.4% maker and 0.8% taker††. At low volume, Coinbase's range can come in cheaper.
Can I use SEPA on both exchanges?
Not confirmed in our source for either platform††. Check each exchange's own deposit page with your account country set to Germany before you transfer euros.
Which one is safer?
Kraken publishes full Proof of Reserves audited by an outside firm, with a way for users to check their own balance†. Coinbase's public proof-of-reserves page covers only its wrapped tokens, not all customer funds†. Neither fact is a guarantee against loss.
