Best Crypto Exchange UK: 2 FCA-Registered Picks

The two exchanges we verified as FCA-registered in the UK, compared on spot fees and product access, plus who else claims UK access we could not confirm.

Dark panel listing the two FCA-registered exchanges — Kraken and Coinbase — beside their spot maker and taker fees

Two of the exchanges we track are registered with the UK's Financial Conduct Authority and verifiable on the operator's own disclosure page: Kraken and Coinbase. We deliberately do not name a single overall winner, because the two lead on different things and Coinbase is cheaper than Kraken on this table even at its own worst pricing tier. Kraken is a Registered Cryptoasset Firm and Electronic Money Institution, but its own country page states UK retail accounts do not get derivatives or DeFi Earn products; Coinbase is registered as a Virtual Asset Service Provider, with its payments arm holding a separate EMI licence, and carries no futures or margin in our records at all. Which structure and price point fits you is the decision this page is built to help you make.

Which Crypto Exchanges Are Actually Registered in the UK?

Only two of the exchanges we track have a UK registration we could verify on an official page, checked 2026-09-06. Be clear about what registration means here: an anti-money-laundering and electronic-money reporting status on the operator. It is not deposit insurance, not a promise of solvency, and not a guarantee your money is safe.

  • Kraken — listed as an FCA Registered Cryptoasset Firm, with its payments handled under an Electronic Money Institution registration, and UK retail accounts explicitly excluded from derivatives and DeFi Earn, per Kraken's availability of services by country page.
  • Coinbase — registered with the FCA as a Virtual Asset Service Provider, with CB Payments Ltd (its UK payments entity) holding a separate Electronic Money Institution registration, reference MLR 900635, per Coinbase's UK VASP registration announcement.

Both require identity verification before you can trade. Handing over a government ID is the price of a venue that answers to a regulator, not a hurdle. Our ranking methodology sets out how we weight it.

What Do the Two Registered Exchanges Charge on a Spot Trade?

Every rate below is one side of one trade, at the regular or entry tier, spot only. Derivatives and card purchases price differently, and Kraken's UK retail accounts do not have derivatives access in the first place.

Exchange Maker Fee Taker Fee
Coinbase (tiered) 0–0.40% 0.05–0.60%
Kraken (entry tier) 0.40% 0.80%

Kraken's Tier 1 pricing applies below $2,500 of 30-day volume, where nearly every new UK account sits. Coinbase is a range rather than a rate: 0–0.40% maker and 0.05–0.60% taker, moving with your 30-day volume. A retail account with no volume history sits near the ceiling, not the floor: quoting Coinbase at 0.05% quotes a tier you have not earned. For the mechanics of the two sides, see Maker vs Taker Fees.

What Does a Round Trip Actually Cost You in Money?

A percentage on a fee page is half a trade: a real position has two sides, so the round trip is the number that matters. Figures below are in USD, because we have no verified GBP conversion rate to publish. Both sides are assumed filled as taker (market) orders.

Scenario $1,000 round trip $10,000 round trip
Coinbase, high-volume floor $1.00 $10.00
Coinbase, retail ceiling $12.00 $120.00
Kraken, entry tier $16.00 $160.00

The arithmetic is taker fee times two sides times position size. Coinbase at the retail ceiling: 0.60% x 2 = 1.20%, or $12.00 on $1,000; at the high-volume floor, 0.05% x 2 = 0.10%, or $1.00 on the same trade. Kraken's entry tier: 0.80% x 2 = 1.60%, or $16.00. Multiply by ten for the $10,000 column.

Read that table carefully: Coinbase's own most expensive tier, 1.20% round trip, is still cheaper than Kraken's cheapest available tier, 1.60%. Of the two verified UK options, there is no volume level at which Kraken beats Coinbase on headline spot cost. Be honest about what that gap means at your size: on a single $1,000 trade it is $4.00; if you round-trip weekly it compounds. Our fee calculator does that arithmetic at your own size.

What Is Each of the Two Best For?

There is no overall number one below, on purpose. Each pick leads on something we can point at in our records:

Coinbase — cheaper on this table, and the narrower product by design. Our records show no futures and no margin, the most structurally limited product menu of the two. It publishes proof of reserves and has operated since 2012. It is also the cheaper of the two verified picks at every tier, per the table above.

Kraken — longest track record, but UK retail loses the leverage products. Operating since 2011, with 24/7 support channels in our records. Our general product record shows futures and margin available on Kraken, but Kraken's own UK country page states retail accounts here do not get derivatives or DeFi Earn — narrowing the practical gap between the two picks for a UK-based trader. The trade-off that remains: Kraken is the pricier of the two at the entry tier, 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.

On reserves: Coinbase publishes proof of reserves. Our records do not show a proof-of-reserves programme for Kraken, and note an emphasis on self-custody instead. That is what the record says, no more and no less.

Does FCA Registration Protect Your Money?

No. Registration as a Cryptoasset Firm, VASP, or EMI is an anti-money-laundering and electronic-money reporting status on the operator. It is not the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, does not insure your crypto holdings, and says nothing about solvency. It means the firm has told a UK regulator who it is and how it handles money-laundering risk, and that regulator can act against it — a real thing, just narrower than "protected."

Both verified picks already strip most of the leverage decision out of your hands: Kraken's UK page excludes derivatives and DeFi Earn for retail, and Coinbase carries no futures or margin at all. The pull toward leverage in the UK market comes from the group below, where menus are wider but registration is unverified or actively conflicting .

What About Binance, MEXC, Bybit, KuCoin, Bitget and OKX?

None of these six are part of the picks above, for six different reasons — treating them as equivalent would be its own kind of inaccuracy:

  • MEXC — explicitly excluded. The United Kingdom is named a Prohibited Jurisdiction on MEXC's own Terms page. This is not "unverified"; it is a confirmed no. MEXC's headline rate of 0% maker and 0.05% taker is not available to UK residents regardless of price.
  • Bybit — the exchange's own pages disagree with each other. Its Service Restricted Countries page lists the UK as excluded, while a December 2025 announcement states "Bybit Officially Launches In The UK". We are not resolving that contradiction for you; we are flagging it as unresolved.
  • Binance — no UK registration found. We checked Binance's own licences page and found Australian registration detail but nothing confirming UK status. "Not found" is not the same as "banned," but it means we cannot rank Binance the way we rank Kraken and Coinbase.
  • OKX — no UK registration found. We located OKX's US licensing detail but nothing UK-specific on its own pages.
  • KuCoin — not on the exclusion list, which is not the same as licensed. The UK does not appear on KuCoin's Restricted Locations list. Absence from a ban list is not a registration.
  • Bitget — same pattern as KuCoin. The UK does not appear on Bitget's Prohibited Countries list. Again, that is the absence of a prohibition, not the presence of a licence.

For reference, headline spot rates on the four that are not explicitly excluded: Binance at 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, Bybit at 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, KuCoin at 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, Bitget at 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, and OKX at 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker. Every one of those is cheaper than Kraken's entry tier. Cheaper and unverified is still unverified. See our Binance vs Kraken breakdown for how that specific pair compares once you set UK status aside.

What Mistakes Do UK Traders Make Picking an Exchange?

  1. Reading "not on the excluded list" as "regulated here." The KuCoin and Bitget terms pages only say the UK isn't named a prohibited market — absence of a ban, not presence of a registration.
  2. Assuming a cheap headline rate means the account will actually open. MEXC's 0.05% taker rate is irrelevant to a UK resident, since MEXC's own terms name the UK a Prohibited Jurisdiction.
  3. Trusting a launch announcement over the compliance page. Bybit's help-center article and its own December 2025 press announcement contradict each other on UK access — a reason to wait and re-check, not a green light.
  4. Assuming Kraken's full product menu applies to a UK account. Our general records show futures and margin available, but Kraken's own UK country page excludes derivatives and DeFi Earn for retail users specifically.

FAQ

Is Binance legal to use in the UK?

We checked Binance's own licences page and found Australian registration detail, but no UK-specific registration we could confirm, as of 2026-09-06. "Not found" is not the same as "prohibited" — unlike MEXC, which explicitly excludes the UK in its own terms — but it does mean we cannot rank Binance as a verified UK option the way we rank Kraken and Coinbase.

Which of the two FCA-registered exchanges is cheapest?

Coinbase, even at its own most expensive tier: a 1.20% round-trip cost against Kraken's cheapest available tier at 1.60%. There is no volume level at which Kraken's spot fees beat Coinbase's on this data. Run your own trade size through the fee calculator.

Does FCA registration mean my crypto is protected?

No. It is an anti-money-laundering and electronic-money reporting status on the operator, not deposit insurance and not a solvency guarantee. On reserves, Coinbase publishes proof of reserves; our records do not show a proof-of-reserves programme for Kraken and note its emphasis on self-custody instead.

Can I use MEXC if I live in the UK?

No. The United Kingdom is listed as a Prohibited Jurisdiction on MEXC's own Terms page, checked 2026-09-06. This is a confirmed exclusion, not an unverified status like Binance or OKX.
